Pretty sure it wasn’t for squirrels

Two Mexican nationals have been arrested trying to smuggle an Armalite .50BMG rifle into Mexico under the hood of their car.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers assigned to the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales seized a 50-caliber assault rifle and arrested two Mexican nationals while performing outbound operations.

CBP officers working southbound inspections, referred a white 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass for a secondary inspection.

While conducting the inspection of the vehicle, officers located a 50-caliber Armalite bolt action rifle on top of the vehicle’s engine.

Both the 19-year-old driver and his 17-year-old passenger were immediately arrested.

I’d be very interested to see where the gun trace leads on this. Rifles like this have a limited market because of their cost, size, and lack of utility. It was almost certainly headed towards a drug cartel south of the border. Kudos to CBP for catching this, but am I the only one a bit worried that they were only intercepted for what appears to be a random inspection?
